The Isle of Wight, located just off the southern coast of England, is a place rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. It's not just known for its stunning landscapes, but also for its traditional way of life and unique language heritage. Whilst researching for my newest collection - Wight Words - I feel I took a journey through traditional Isle of Wight, delving into the old language and words that have shaped the island's identity.<\/span><\/p>

The Isle of Wight dialect is in fact a regional<\/u> dialect of English and is thought to have developed and grown from the Old English dialects spoken by the early settlers on the island. It is a distinctive dialect which is a a charming blend of Old English, Old Norse, and Norman French, infused with local words and phrases<\/span><\/p>

The Isle of Wight regional dialect has a number of distinctive features, including:<\/span><\/p>

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Pronunciation:<\/span><\/strong> The Isle of Wight dialect is characterized by a number of distinctive pronunciations, such as the pronunciation of the \"r\" sound at the end of words, and the pronunciation of the \"a\" sound in words like \"cat\" and \"hat.\"<\/span><\/p>

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Vocabulary:<\/span><\/strong> The Isle of Wight dialect has a number of distinctive words and phrases, such as \"caulkhead\" (an islander born and bred), \"firking\" (fidgeting), and \"gurt\" (big).<\/span><\/p>

The Isle of Wight dialect is still spoken by some people on the island today, but it is becoming less common, especially amongst the younger generation. This is due to a number of factors, including the influence of social media and the increasing mobility where younger people have to move away to undertake university study or get into certain careers.<\/span><\/p>

Being a caulkhead myself I decided to use some of my products to help preserve and promote the language of my \u2018oisle'.<\/span><\/p>
